Why automatic

All your attention on the road — none on the gearbox

01

Simpler from lesson one

No clutch control, no stalling at lights, no hill-start anxiety. You focus on observation, position and judgement — the skills that actually decide your test.

02

Often faster to test-ready

Many learners progress more quickly in an automatic because every lesson minute goes into road craft instead of gear changes.

03

The future is automatic anyway

Every electric car is automatic, and most new cars sold are automatic or hybrid. An automatic licence fits where driving is going.

Worth knowing

The one honest caveat: code 78.

Pass your test in an automatic and your licence carries code 78 — it covers automatic vehicles only, so you can't drive a manual on it. For most people that's no limitation at all; if you know you'll need manual (some jobs, some van fleets), Kris teaches manual in South West Dublin & Kildare. We'll give you an honest steer either way.

Common questions

Automatic lessons — FAQ

Can I do my EDT lessons in an automatic car?

Yes. All 12 Essential Driver Training lessons can be completed in an automatic car and are signed off on the RSA portal exactly as with manual. The syllabus is the same — you simply skip the clutch.

Can I sit the driving test in an automatic?

Yes. You sit the same RSA test in an automatic car. If you pass in an automatic, your licence carries code 78, which means it covers automatic vehicles only — you cannot drive a manual on it.

Are automatic lessons more expensive?

No. Our automatic lessons cost the same as manual — single lessons from €50, 2-hour EDT lessons from €100, and the full 12-lesson EDT package €550.

What areas do your automatic instructors cover?

Kris teaches automatic (and manual) across South West Dublin and Kildare — Lucan, Clondalkin, Tallaght, Templeogue, Leixlip, Celbridge and Maynooth. Tudor teaches in an automatic across West Dublin and Dublin 15 — Blanchardstown, Castleknock, Ongar, Clonsilla, Mulhuddart and Tyrrelstown. Liam teaches in an automatic across Navan, Kells, Trim, Dunshaughlin, Ratoath and Meath, plus Blanchardstown, Castleknock and Clonsilla.

Can I learn in my own automatic car?

Yes. Tony can deliver lessons, mock tests and pre-test preparation in your own automatic car — ideal if you'll be doing your test in it. Use the booking form and mention your own automatic in the message.

Is automatic easier to learn than manual?

For most people, yes. With no clutch or gears to manage, you can put all your attention on observation, road position and hazard anticipation — the skills that actually decide the driving test and real-world safety. Read why in our guide, Careless or Clueless?
